Applying Pest Control Measures for Coffee Plants

After a period of research, the Plant Protection Department of Đắk Lắk Province has identified the main pests affecting coffee trees and developed effective control measures.

Following successful field trials, the department recommends that farmers use pesticides such as Supracide 40ND and Cymerin 25EC, which are highly effective against green soft scale insects and fruit mealybugs on coffee plants. At the same time, the department has organized training programs to help coffee growers widely adopt the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach, which relies on natural predators to reduce pest populations. This practice helps farmers lower production costs, improve economic efficiency, limit pest damage, reduce pesticide residues in coffee products, and minimize environmental pollution.

Since 2007, the provincial Plant Protection Department has also researched and identified two species of cicadas that damage coffee roots in Đắk Lắk. Cicada nymphs are found mostly at soil depths of 20–70 cm, where fine feeder roots of coffee trees concentrate. After testing several biological products, the technical team determined that Metavina 90DP, a biopesticide derived from the fungus Metarhizium, achieved the best results—killing over 70% of nymphs—while causing minimal environmental impact. This product is now recommended for widespread use by coffee farmers.
