Many Crops Hit by Drought in Cư M’gar – Đắk Lắk

Prolonged heat has severely affected agricultural production in Cư M’gar District, damaging large areas of crops.

In Ea M’droh Commune, more than 2,300 hectares of crops—including coffee, pepper, and durian—have seen reduced yields or risk total loss due to a lack of irrigation water. Of this, 162 hectares are at risk of complete loss, with the hardest-hit areas in Buôn D’hung and the villages of Đoàn Kết, Đồng Tâm, and Thạch Sơn.

Similarly, preliminary surveys in Ea Tar Commune show that over 2,085 hectares of crops are suffering from drought.

According to the district Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, water levels in local reservoirs and dams are falling sharply, threatening irrigation for farming. Among 68 irrigation facilities in the district (51 reservoirs and 17 weirs), as of the end of April 2024 only two reservoirs remain near full capacity, 11 are estimated at around 71%, and six have dropped to “dead water level,” making irrigation impossible.

Cư M’gar District has around 73,000 hectares of agricultural land. In response, the district People’s Committee has deployed inspection teams to assess on-site drought conditions; is reviewing and evaluating irrigation water sources; and has drawn up plans to store and balance water among the irrigation works to meet crop irrigation needs. Authorities are also urging farmers to water efficiently and avoid waste.
