1. Strengthening Maritime Cooperation Between Vietnam and Sweden
Table of Contents
On September 3, 2025, with the support and coordination of the Vietnam Trade Office in Sweden, a delegation from the Port of Gothenburg — Sweden’s largest port and the main maritime gateway to Northern Europe — paid a working visit to SP-SSA International Terminal (SSIT) in Ba Ria–Vung Tau, Vietnam.
During the meeting, both sides shared updates on operational performance, transport capacity, port infrastructure, and expansion plans. The discussions focused particularly on initiatives to develop green and smart port models, marking a practical follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2024 between the Port of Gothenburg and Vietnamese partners — an achievement strongly supported by the Vietnam Trade Office.
2. Key Port Profiles: Gothenburg and SSIT
The Port of Gothenburg serves as Northern Europe’s leading logistics hub, handling approximately 30% of Sweden’s total import and export volume. It is a vital center for container shipping, liquid cargo, and renewable energy logistics.
Meanwhile, SSIT stands as one of Vietnam’s most modern deep-water ports, capable of accommodating the world’s largest container vessels. The port plays a crucial role in enhancing cargo transshipment capacity and strengthening Southern Vietnam’s position in regional maritime logistics.
3. Toward a Green and Smart Port Partnership
Both sides agreed to deepen practical cooperation through:
-
Information exchange and partner networking;
-
Adoption of advanced technology solutions to enhance efficiency and sustainability;
-
Joint initiatives to optimize logistics operations and reduce emissions.
One of the long-term goals discussed is the establishment of a direct maritime route between Vietnam and Northern Europe.
Such a connection would:
-
Facilitate faster access for Vietnamese goods to European markets; and
-
Enable Northern European exports to reach Vietnam and the broader Southeast Asian region more efficiently.
4. A Step Forward in Sustainable Maritime Development
The visit marks a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between Vietnamese and Swedish port systems. It highlights a shared commitment to sustainable development, innovation, and digital transformation within the maritime sector — paving the way for a modern, green, and globally connected logistics network linking Vietnam and Northern Europe.
