According to recent reports, several Egyptian importers have been engaging in fraudulent trade practices, including delayed payments and intentional contract breaches after goods arrive at the port. Their objective appears to be price manipulation, causing significant losses to Vietnamese exporters.
Common Patterns of Fraudulent Cases
The fraudulent cases share several similarities:
-
Export contracts for agricultural commodities (such as cinnamon, pepper, coffee, etc.) were signed through intermediaries, without direct negotiation with the buyers—mainly because the Egyptian buyers do not communicate in English.
-
There are also signs of collusion between the importers and local banks to withhold original shipping documents, even after formal requests from Vietnamese banks.
