4C Certification (Common Code for the Coffee Community)

Achieving the 4C Certification (Common Code for the Coffee Community) is a process that requires standardizing coffee production toward sustainability, transparency, and traceability. Below is a detailed guide to help you understand and prepare for the certification process properly:

I. Conditions for Obtaining 4C Certification

1. Clear Coffee Production Area

  • Must have a clearly defined production area with details such as farmer lists, acreage, and output.

  • The production area can be owned by the company or linked through farmer partnerships.

2. Sustainable Production Practices

  • No use of child labor.

  • Compliance with labor safety regulations.

  • No use of banned chemicals.

  • Application of farming techniques that save resources and protect the environment.

3. Traceability Management

  • Clear records of coffee purchasing, processing, grading, and storage.

  • A lot code system must be in place to identify the origin and owner of each coffee batch.

4. Internal Management System (IMS)

  • All documents, records, and procedures must be written and organized.

  • A person in charge must be assigned to oversee the internal quality system.

II. Steps to Achieve 4C Certification

Step

Description

Step 1: Contact a certification body (e.g., CafeControl – Vietnam) to register.
Step 2: Develop the coffee production area (farmers, partner farms).
Step 3: Train farmers and staff on sustainable cultivation practices.
Step 4: Establish a traceability and record-keeping system.
Step 5: Conduct an internal self-audit.
Step 6: Invite the certification body to perform an on-site audit.
Step 7: If all requirements are met → 4C Certificate issued (valid for 3 years).

III. Estimated 4C Certification Costs
