Table of Contents
On December 6, 2011, the Binh Phuoc Provincial Center for Agricultural and Fisheries Extension, together with the Bu Dang District Agricultural Extension Station, held a specialized workshop titled “Grafting for Coffee Tree Rejuvenation.”
The goal: equip farmers with scientific and technical knowledge to raise productivity and secure the sustainable development of Binh Phuoc’s coffee sector.
Key Participants and Stakeholders
The event brought together a wide range of experts and local representatives, including:
-
Leading national coffee experts
-
Officials from the Binh Phuoc Department of Agriculture and Rural Development
-
Representatives of the Provincial Agricultural and Fisheries Extension Center
-
Agricultural extension stations from Bu Dang and Bu Dop districts
-
Nearly 100 coffee farmers and representatives from fertilizer and crop-protection companies
Current Coffee Production Challenges
A preliminary report highlighted that while Binh Phuoc’s soil and climate are ideal for coffee cultivation, many plantations in Bu Dang district and across the province are in decline. Yields have dropped, leading some households to consider abandoning coffee production.
Grafting as a Sustainable Solution
Experts stressed that with proper grafting techniques and correct crop care, farmers can rejuvenate aging coffee gardens and maintain high, stable yields.
-
With coffee prices between 36,000–40,000 VND/kg, farmers can earn 80–120 million VND per hectare, significantly improving household incomes.
Expert Insights on Grafting Techniques
Dr. Ton Nu Tuan Nam, former researcher at the Central Highlands Agro-Forestry Science and Technology Institute, delivered a detailed technical presentation on:
-
Optimal timing and methods for cutting and grafting
-
Post-grafting care, including fertilization, irrigation, shaping, pruning, and pest and disease management
-
Successful research findings from Dak Lak and Binh Phuoc on coffee tree rejuvenation through grafting
Practical Experiences and Industry Support
The workshop also featured:
-
Presentations from outstanding coffee growers in Bu Dang, who shared hands-on experience in grafted coffee cultivation.
-
Fertilizer and crop protection companies showcasing high-performance experimental results and best practices.
Farmers’ Questions and Expert Guidance
Farmers raised nearly 30 questions covering:
-
Grafting techniques and timing
-
Fertilizer use and irrigation practices
-
Pest and disease prevention
-
Post-harvest care and reliable seedling sources
-
Agricultural extension policies
Scientists, managers, and business representatives provided clear, actionable guidance, ensuring farmers left the workshop with practical knowledge to implement grafting successfully.
Key Takeaway
The workshop demonstrated that grafting is a powerful tool to rejuvenate aging coffee plantations, ensuring sustainable yields and improved income for Binh Phuoc farmers. With the right technical training and post-grafting care, coffee remains a profitable and long-term crop for the region.
