Brazil: Leading Coffee Producer and Exporter

Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages globally, with its popularity and consumption continuing to rise in recent years. According to data from the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Association (CeCafé), the coffee export volume for the 2018/2019 coffee season reached a record 41.1 million bags (60 kg per bag), a 35% increase compared to the previous coffee season. The export revenue during this period amounted to $5.39 billion, marking a 9.8% increase from the previous season, a significant achievement.

Brazil has been exporting better quality coffee after a record-breaking harvest, although the value of exports was slightly lower. The export of green coffee increased by 27.9%, accounting for nearly 82% of total exports, with Robusta coffee exports rising significantly by over 429%.

For industrial coffee, the export of roasted coffee declined by 1.7%, while the export of instant coffee rose by 11.3%, totaling 3.88 million bags, reflecting an increase in market share.

The main buyers of Brazilian coffee include the United States, Germany, Italy, and Japan, with these four countries accounting for a total of 20.9 million bags. While China still occupies a smaller share, it has seen an increase, and it is expected that the Chinese market will experience significant growth.

In the new 2019/2020 coffee season, Brazilian coffee producers face promising markets. However, they are expected to use their coffee reserves to meet both domestic demand and export needs due to a lower harvest this season, as coffee plant productivity has decreased following a “biennial” cycle.

Brazil is promoting its coffee industry through advertising collaborations with Google, aiming to increase the number of potential buyers from all over the world, as stated by Exporta Mais, the largest export portal in Latin America.
