Côte d’Ivoire – A Promising Market for Expanding Vietnamese Rice Exports to West Africa

In recent years, trade relations between Vietnam and Côte d’Ivoire have strengthened, with rice emerging as one of the key export commodities contributing to the growing bilateral trade.

Côte d’Ivoire: A Major Rice-Consuming Market

Côte d’Ivoire is one of Africa’s largest rice-consuming countries, as rice is a staple food in the daily diet of its population. However, the country’s domestic production capacity remains insufficient to meet local demand, resulting in significant rice imports from foreign suppliers. This presents a substantial opportunity for Vietnamese rice exporters, given Vietnam’s strong production capacity and competitive advantages.

According to ITC statistics, Côte d’Ivoire’s rice import value in 2023 reached USD 722.15 million, ranking it the 12th largest rice importer globally. Vietnam led the market with a 43.5% market share, far ahead of competitors.

Vietnam’s Rice Exports to Côte d’Ivoire

Based on Vietnam Customs data, as of November 2024, Vietnam exported 437.78 thousand tons of rice, earning USD 260.07 million — representing a 13.43% decrease in volume and a 5.31% decrease in value compared to the same period last year.

Vietnamese rice is highly appreciated in Côte d’Ivoire for its long grains, pleasant aroma, and food safety standards. Compared with competitors such as Thailand and India, Vietnamese rice offers greater price flexibility, making it more suitable for the average-income consumer segment across Africa.

Consumer Preferences and Market Requirements

Consumers in Côte d’Ivoire currently prefer low-cost, long-grain white rice that cooks easily. However, demand for premium fragrant rice varieties is gradually increasing. Exporters should focus on airtight packaging to prevent mold and damage during long-distance sea transport.

Since French is the official language in Côte d’Ivoire, it is essential that contracts, promotional materials, and product labels be available in French to facilitate trade negotiations and build trust with local buyers.

Strategies to Strengthen Vietnamese Rice Exports

To further boost rice exports to Côte d’Ivoire, Vietnamese enterprises should:

  • Implement competitive pricing strategies suitable for West African markets;

  • Ensure consistent product quality and food safety compliance;

  • Build reliable partnerships with local importers and distributors;

  • Invest in branding and market promotion using bilingual materials (French and English).

If these efforts are effectively executed, Vietnam will not only consolidate but also expand its leadership in Côte d’Ivoire’s rice market — paving the way for stronger presence in West Africa’s high-potential agricultural markets.
