Dak Nong: A “Stopgap Solution” for Early-Flowering Coffee Trees

Recently, prolonged rainfall for many days in Krong No District triggered some coffee trees to bloom while their cherries were still ripening, making harvesting difficult and almost certain to affect the next crop’s yield and quality.

This situation has left many farmers worried, unsure how to minimize losses for the coming season.

According to Ms. Nguyễn Thị Mai Phương, Head of the Krong No Plant Protection Station, early flowering can seriously reduce both the yield and quality of the following coffee harvest. Because the rains have not yet ended, these early blossoms risk being damaged by unfavorable weather, causing flower drop and poor fruit set. Even if conditions later improve and the flowers set fruit, the trees have not had sufficient rest or received adequate fertilizer. As a result, they may be too weak, leading to lower cherry quality and reduced yields in the next crop.

Therefore, Ms. Phương advises that the best course is for farmers to remove the prematurely opened blossoms. After finishing the harvest, they should allow the trees a rest period and then irrigate to trigger a synchronized, healthy flowering. This will help improve both the quality and the yield of the next coffee season.
