Dak Nong Farmers Earn Profits Growing Clean Pepper Despite Market Price Slump

Market Slump vs. Stable Income

While thousands of Vietnamese pepper growers struggle with years of falling prices, farmers in Thuận Hà Commune, Đắk Song District, Đắk Nông Province remain financially secure. Local pepper prices dropped below 50,000 VND/kg, yet these farmers consistently sell for over 80,000 VND/kg, almost 2.5 times higher than the market rate.

Turning to Clean, Organic-Oriented Farming

In 2012, farmer Nông Văn Lê invested in 6 hectares of black pepper using a strict clean-agriculture process:

  • No chemical herbicides – all weeding is done manually.

  • Organic fertilizers and bio-products replace chemical fertilizers.

  • Biological plant-protection agents substitute for synthetic pesticides.

This approach produces pepper that meets stringent European export standards, allowing a partner exporter to buy the entire crop at premium prices year after year.

A Community of “Clean Pepper” Growers

Thuận Hà now has around 30 households following the same clean-farming model. Their pepper is contracted to exporters for prices 2.5–3 times higher than the domestic market.

Farmer Trần Văn Toàn admits the process is initially demanding: multiple steps must meet strict clean-crop criteria. Yet the reward is a consistently higher and more stable income.

Strict Harvest & Post-Harvest Practices

  • Harvest only when 95% of berries are fully ripe.

  • Avoid mixing in leaves or branches during picking.

  • Dry and store pepper in clean, hygienic facilities to maintain export quality.

Local Support & Replication

According to Lê Hoàng Vinh, Head of the Đắk Song Agriculture and Rural Development Office, the Thuận Phát Cooperative is a model for linking clean production with guaranteed off-take agreements. The district encourages more farmers to adopt this approach to improve product quality and secure stable markets.

Key Takeaways for Pepper Growers

  • Organic and bio-based methods can command a price premium even when market prices crash.

  • Guaranteed contracts with exporters reduce risk and ensure long-term profitability.

  • Clean harvest and storage protocols are crucial for meeting strict international standards.

By embracing sustainable, chemical-free pepper production, Thuận Hà farmers demonstrate that even amid a prolonged price slump, high-quality, clean pepper can remain profitable and competitive in global markets.
