Discovery of a High-Yield Pepper Variety
Table of Contents
In Thuan Hanh commune, Dak Song district, farmer Vu Van Hieu recently discovered about 10 pepper vines (out of 300 three-year-old vines) with strikingly unusual traits. These plants produce fruit spikes measuring 20–25 cm, about 2.5 times longer and with 1.5 times larger berries than the widely grown Vinh Linh variety.
Key differences include:
-
Early fruiting: These vines began bearing fruit in their second year, whereas Vinh Linh typically fruits only after the trellis is fully covered.
-
Exceptional yield: Each “strange” vine (three runners per post) delivers 25–30 kg of dry pepper, roughly triple the yield of Vinh Linh.
-
Distinct appearance: The young shoots are white like morning-glory shoots, while the leaves are broader and a deeper green, showing strong vigor even with minimal care.
Strong Interest from Farmers and Visitors
The impressive productivity quickly attracted visitors from Dak Nong, Chu Se (Gia Lai) and other provinces who came to observe and seek planting material.
Many offered to pay around 200,000 VND per cutting or 400,000 VND per kilogram of ripe pepper seeds, but Hieu has not yet agreed, though he has already propagated 50 vines of this unique type.
Some speculate the variety might originate from India or Cambodia, but no official identification has been confirmed.
Local Authorities Investigate
-
Local confirmation: Nguyen Cao Tri, Chairman of the Thuan Hanh Farmers’ Association, noted that this pepper variety yields two to three times more than ordinary vines.
-
Agricultural survey: The Dak Song District Agriculture Office has dispatched specialists to identify the variety and evaluate its potential.
-
Future plans: If confirmed, the district plans to work with the farmer to expand cultivation, helping boost pepper production efficiency.
Conclusion
This newly discovered pepper variety in Dak Nong offers promising opportunities for the region’s pepper industry. If it proves stable and disease-resistant, it could help farmers increase yields and income despite fluctuating market prices.
