Discovery of 16 Coffee Pests in Đắk Lắk

The Đắk Lắk Provincial Plant Protection Sub-Department has identified 16 species of pests on coffee plants, spanning 12 families across 6 insect orders.

Some of these pests appear throughout all growth stages of coffee, including stem canker, coffee leaf rust, green soft scale, brown scale, fruit mealybugs, root mealybugs, stem borers, branch borers, coffee berry borers, and nematodes.

Currently, erratic weather patterns of unseasonal rain and sunshine have triggered a surge in coffee pests. According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, 20–27% of the province’s coffee area is affected—mainly by mealybugs, green soft scales, coffee rust, and fruit drop caused by fungal infection.

Key coffee-growing districts—Cư M’Gar, Krông Năng, Ea H’Leo, and Krông Pắk—have all reported outbreaks of mealybugs, branch borers, and berry borers.

Authorities have urged farmers and coffee enterprises to:

  • Clean up plantations, prune and burn heavily infested branches before applying plant-protection chemicals.

  • Classify pest types and apply appropriate chemical treatments based on the life cycle and development pattern of each pest.

  • Strengthen cultural practices to boost plant resistance and ensure stable coffee yields.

Đắk Lắk now has over 191,000 hectares of coffee, producing more than 400,000 tons of green coffee beans annually, with production concentrated mainly in Cư M’Gar, Krông Búk, Krông Pắk, Krông Năng, and Ea H’Leo.
