Engaging Youth in the Global Natural Rubber Industry

In a joint effort to inspire and attract young generations to the natural rubber (NR) sector, the International Rubber Research and Development Board (IRRDB) and its Next Generation Rubber Experts Group (NextGeNRE) recently hosted the first International Youth Forum on Natural Rubber.

Forum Theme: “Revitalizing the Natural Rubber Industry and Engaging Youth”

The forum, themed “Revitalizing the Natural Rubber Industry and Engaging Youth,” emphasized the importance of ensuring that young professionals are well-informed about the current challenges and opportunities in the natural rubber industry.

The event aimed to create an inclusive and motivating environment that encourages young researchers, scientists, and agribusiness entrepreneurs to actively participate in rubber cultivation, research, and development. It also sought to build a knowledge-driven and dynamic community that bridges the gap between experienced industry experts and emerging youth leaders in the NR sector.

Equipping the Next Generation for Industry Transformation

During a productive discussion session, keynote speakers highlighted the need to design more attractive career pathways and offer greater opportunities for young people — beyond traditional options currently available.

They stressed the importance of equipping youth with technical knowledge, cross-cultural awareness, and environmental values, encouraging them to develop strategic and innovative thinking to tackle industry issues such as market monopolies and tire consumption patterns.

The speakers also underscored the critical role of technology-driven participation, urging young professionals to explore digital tools and smart solutions within the rubber value chain.

Key Areas for Youth Development

The forum outlined several priority areas for young professionals in the industry, including:

  • Continuous learning and skill development

  • Diversification and networking

  • Sustainability and green practices

  • Technology integration

  • Financial management and adaptability

To address the challenges facing agricultural entrepreneurs, the speakers called for a combination of resilience, strategic planning, lifelong learning, and active engagement — supported by industry associations and institutions.

Building a Sustainable Future for Natural Rubber

By fostering collaboration between generations, the IRRDB and NextGeNRE aim to empower young professionals to drive the future sustainability and competitiveness of the global natural rubber industry.

The forum concluded that youth engagement is essential not only for ensuring a steady talent pipeline but also for reshaping the industry through innovation, digitalization, and environmentally responsible practices.
