Improving Productivity and Quality of Agricultural Products and Goods

On May 30, the Prime Minister approved the project “Enhancing the Productivity and Quality of Agricultural Products and Goods by 2020”, as part of the national program “Improving the Productivity and Quality of Vietnamese Enterprises’ Products and Goods by 2020.”

Goals of the Project

The project aims to apply scientific and technological advances, promote innovation, and improve management practices to significantly increase the productivity and quality of key agricultural, forestry, and fishery products. This will strengthen the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods for both domestic consumption and export, contributing to economic growth and improved social welfare.

Targets

  • 2012–2015 phase: Strive for 70% of enterprises under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to adopt scientific and technological advances, update management systems, and improve productivity and quality of key products such as rice, coffee, tea, and sugarcane. In addition, 80% of national standards for these major products should be reviewed and harmonized with international and regional standards.

  • 2016–2020 phase: Ensure 100% of enterprises producing key agricultural goods implement projects to enhance productivity and quality. All national standards in agriculture should be fully aligned with international and regional standards. All key production facilities for agricultural, forestry, and fishery products must comply with national technical regulations to guarantee safety and environmental protection.

Key Tasks and Actions

  • Rice sector: Apply advanced technologies in breeding, intensive farming, post-harvest loss reduction, and processing. Implement VietGAP and quality management systems to create high-yield, high-quality rice production models in the Mekong Delta.

  • Coffee sector: Transfer advanced techniques in breeding, care, harvesting, and processing; adopt sustainable production practices such as 4C, UTZ, and VietGAP standards. Use quality management systems to establish intensive cultivation models linked to processing, ensuring high productivity, quality, and food safety in the Central Highlands.

  • Fruit and vegetable sector: Introduce improved varieties and apply VietGAP to produce high-yield, safe vegetables and fruits in the Southeast, Red River Delta, and Mekong Delta.

  • Aquaculture: Advance techniques in breeding and commercial farming of tra catfish and shrimp, combined with processing to achieve high productivity and quality certified by GlobalGAP, HACCP, and ISO standards in the Mekong Delta and Central Region.

  • Livestock: Apply new breeding techniques and biosecurity practices to build models for raising pigs and poultry with high productivity and quality, certified under VietGAHP in the Red River Delta, Central, and Southeast regions.

This comprehensive project aims to modernize Vietnam’s agriculture, enhance product quality, and boost competitiveness in both domestic and global markets.
