Son La: 10,000 Households Lose Tap Water Due to Coffee Wastewater

After three consecutive days without running water, by the morning of December 3, more than 10,000 households in Son La City, Son La Province finally had their tap water supply restored.

Earlier, on December 1, when the city’s main water supply unexpectedly developed a foul odor and an unusual color, the No. 1 Son La City Water Supply Enterprise was forced to cut off water service to all schools, hospitals, and 10,000 households in the area.

The cause was traced to wastewater from three coffee-processing facilities in Muổi Nọi Commune (Thuận Châu District) and Chiềng Cọ Commune (Son La City), along with numerous household coffee-processing operations that had discharged waste into local streams, contaminating the water source used for the city’s supply.

To address the crisis, the Son La City People’s Committee ordered an immediate suspension of all coffee processing and roasting activities linked to the pollution of the municipal water source.

Authorities are continuing to investigate and identify violators, while also testing the quality of the restored water supply to ensure it meets safety standards for residents
