Strengthening Vietnam–UNIDO Cooperation in 2025

On January 21, 2025, at the Vienna International Center, Ambassador Vũ Lê Thái Hoàng presented his Letter of Credence to Mr. Gerd Müller, Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The Ambassador was accompanied by the Head of the Vietnam Trade Office and representatives from the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the International Organizations in Austria.

Ambassador Vũ Lê Thái Hoàng conveyed the greetings of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bùi Thanh Sơn and expressed gratitude to UNIDO and Mr. Gerd Müller for their effective cooperation and practical support for Vietnam’s industrialization, modernization, and sustainable development over the past four decades.

Vietnam–UNIDO Partnership Overview

Vietnam has been a member of UNIDO since 1985, with its Hanoi Country Office providing one of the highest levels of technical assistance among UNIDO’s 30 global offices.
Key cooperation areas include:

  • Energy efficiency in industry;

  • Low-carbon circular economy development;

  • Eco-industrial park transformation;

  • Food innovation and quality assurance systems for exports;

  • Clean and green technology transfer;

  • Industrial policy consultation;

  • Responsible business, investment, and trade promotion.

The Ambassador highlighted Vietnam’s impressive socio-economic growth, international integration, and its active and responsible role within the United Nations, noting that Vietnam was among the earliest nations to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Future Directions for Cooperation

Ambassador Vũ Lê Thái Hoàng proposed that UNIDO continue to expand cooperation by:

  • Providing policy advice and capacity building;

  • Facilitating financial partnerships and technology transfer;

  • Supporting Vietnam’s green and digital transformation, circular and sharing economy, and innovation ecosystems.

He emphasized that these initiatives will be key to driving Vietnam’s next phase of growth toward prosperity and sustainability.
The Ambassador also encouraged UNIDO to recruit more Vietnamese professionals, enhancing coordination and the effective implementation of UNIDO projects in Vietnam.
