Taiwan’s Imports of Pearls and Pearl Products in 2023–2024

Based on data compiled by the Vietnam Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei (VECO Taipei) and the Taiwan International Trade Administration (TITA), the following provides an overview of Taiwan’s import situation for pearls and pearl-related products over the past two years.


1. Market Overview

According to TITA statistics, in 2024, Taiwan’s total import value of pearls (HS 7101: Natural or cultured pearls, whether or not worked or graded but not strung, mounted, or set; pearls, natural or cultured, temporarily strung for convenience of transport) reached USD 3.69 million, marking a 26.63% decline compared to 2023.

Taiwan imported from 13 partner countries in 2024, one fewer than in 2023.

French Polynesia was the largest supplier, with a total value of USD 2.21 million, accounting for 59.95% of Taiwan’s pearl imports in 2024. Other major suppliers included Australia, Austria, China, and Japan.

Notably, Vietnam did not export any pearl-related products under HS 7101 to Taiwan during 2023–2024.


2. Imports of Pearl Products (HS 7116)

In contrast, Taiwan’s imports of articles made from natural or cultured pearls and precious stones (HS 7116) rose significantly.

In 2024, Taiwan imported these goods from 50 global partners, with a total value of USD 45.96 million, representing a 36.39% increase over 2023.

China was Taiwan’s largest supplier, exporting USD 24.53 million, equivalent to 53.37% of Taiwan’s total imports in this category.

Other major suppliers in 2024 included Italy, Japan, France, and South Korea.

Vietnam ranked 14th, exporting USD 150,910, accounting for 0.33% of Taiwan’s total import value in this category — a sharp decline from USD 488,270 in 2023.

3. Import Policy and Tariffs

According to Taiwan Customs, both product categories HS 7101 and HS 7116 enjoy a 0% MFN tariff rate, with no quarantine requirements.

These conditions provide favorable access for exporters seeking to enter the Taiwanese market with pearl and jewelry products.


4. Relevant Trade Events

Taiwan organizes an annual Taiwan Jewellery & Gem Fair to promote trade and networking in the pearl and gemstone industry.
