Despite vast potential for cooperation, Vietnam and New Zealand still face several challenges — including geographical distance, differing product quality standards, and limited mutual understanding of each other’s business culture.
To overcome these barriers and strengthen bilateral relations, both countries need to take concrete steps in trade facilitation, investment promotion, and technological collaboration.
1. Strengthening Trade Promotion and Business Connectivity

The first step toward deeper cooperation is to enhance trade and investment promotion activities, prioritizing trade fairs, exhibitions, and economic forums to connect businesses from both sides.
These platforms not only help expand market access but also allow enterprises to identify potential partners and explore joint ventures across key industries such as agriculture, food processing, logistics, and technology.
2. Simplifying Trade Procedures and Legal Frameworks
Vietnam and New Zealand are encouraged to simplify customs procedures and reduce administrative barriers to foster a more transparent and efficient trading environment.
Efforts should also focus on improving legal frameworks, promoting digital trade facilitation, and ensuring smoother market access under existing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).
3. Promoting Human Resource Development and Technology Transfer
Another strategic priority is to strengthen cooperation in education, training, and technology transfer.
Both nations can leverage academic and professional exchange programs to enhance capacity building in high-tech sectors such as agricultural innovation, renewable energy, biotechnology, and digital transformation.
4. FTAs – A Strong Legal Foundation for Bilateral Growth
Vietnam and New Zealand share membership in multiple FTAs — including CPTPP, AANZFTA, and RCEP — providing a solid legal framework for expanding trade and investment cooperation.
These agreements allow both countries to integrate more deeply into global value chains, enhance the value-added of export products, and contribute to a stable and prosperous Asia-Pacific region.
5. Trade Promotion Activities in 2025
Recognizing 2025 as a pivotal year in bilateral relations, the Vietnam Trade Office in New Zealand has been actively organizing initiatives to promote Vietnamese goods and connect with New Zealand’s major economic centers.
At the ASEAN Market Festival in Wellington, held shortly after the Lunar New Year 2025, the Trade Office showcased Vietnamese products and culture to over 30,000 visitors, including Southeast Asian enterprises and local consumers.
Later in February, the Trade Office participated in a business and investment conference with Palmerston North City Council — New Zealand’s third-largest logistics and service hub — introducing opportunities for cooperation in trade, services, and education to policymakers, diplomats, and representatives from leading tech start-ups, universities, and research centers.
The event was attended by Mayor Grant Smith and international delegates from the US, UK, Australia, the Netherlands, South Korea, and India.
6. 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations – A Milestone for the Future
In 2025, Vietnam and New Zealand celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations — a milestone marking half a century of friendship and collaboration.
Under the direction of Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Trade Office continues to coordinate with the Vietnamese Embassy in New Zealand and local business organizations to implement a wide range of activities:
-
Trade and investment conferences during official high-level visits
-
The 9th Vietnam–New Zealand Joint Committee on Economic and Trade Cooperation
-
Promotional events introducing Vietnamese products to Asian and European supermarkets in New Zealand
These efforts reinforce Vietnam’s role as a reliable partner, supporting businesses from both nations in expanding their market reach and fostering innovation.
With complementary economic strengths and shared strategic goals, Vietnam–New Zealand relations are poised for dynamic growth, contributing to a peaceful, stable, and sustainable Asia-Pacific region.
