According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the global tilapia marketreached an estimated USD 10.6 billion in 2024 and is projected to climb to USD 14.5 billion by 2033. Global tilapia production currently stands at around 7 million tons, and is forecast to reach 7.3 million tons by 2025.
Traditionally, Vietnam has been recognized as the world’s largest exporter of pangasius (tra fish). Both pangasius and tilapia belong to the white-meat fish group, sharing similar farming environments. Notably, the tilapia farming cycle lasts only 5–6 months to reach a market weight of 600–800 grams per fish, offering low production costs and high efficiency.
The Mekong Delta currently has about 3,300 hectares of water surface suitable for tilapia-shrimp rotation or integrated farming, creating vast potential for expansion.
At present, Vietnam ranks fifth in Asia in tilapia production—after China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and the Philippines. With global tilapia consumption growing by an average of 13% per year and the U.S. importing about 200,000 tons annually, VASEP affirms that Vietnam’s opportunity to capture a larger market share is stronger than ever.
Expanding Market Opportunities in the U.S. and EU
Vietnamese tilapia products have gained increasing popularity in European markets, known for their stringent import requirements, which further boosts the country’s export credibility.
Moreover, China’s reduction in supply and the U.S. anti-dumping tariff of up to 125% on Chinese tilapia have created a rare opportunity for Vietnam to expand its global export footprint.
Vietnam’s tilapia exports surged by 138% in 2024, with the U.S. emerging as the leading market for Vietnamese tilapia.
