According to data from Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s export turnover to Japan reached USD 4.16 billion in the first two months of 2025, marking a 15% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This figure demonstrates that Vietnam still has significant potential to expand its exports to Japan.
Five Key Opportunities for Vietnamese Goods in the Japanese Market
Table of Contents
According to Mr. Ta Duc Minh, Commercial Counselor of Vietnam in Japan, there are five major opportunities for Vietnamese exporters in 2025:
1. Japan’s strong demand for key Vietnamese products
With a population of over 126 million, Japan has a huge demand for imported goods—especially those where Vietnam has competitive advantages such as agriculture, forestry, and seafood (fruits, frozen foods, aquatic products, wood items), as well as manufactured goods like textiles, footwear, transport equipment, and spare parts.
This creates a favorable environment for Vietnam to further strengthen its export position in Japan.
2. Deepening bilateral relations between Vietnam and Japan
The Vietnam–Japan partnership continues to flourish across multiple sectors. Ongoing cooperation agreements are providing new opportunities for trade and investment, helping Vietnamese enterprises strengthen their market presence in Japan.
3. Improved product quality and consumer acceptance
Vietnamese products are increasingly meeting Japan’s high-quality standards, while Japanese consumers are becoming more open to imported goods, especially niche products that cater to their preferences.
This offers new opportunities for consumer goods, toys, and sports equipment from Vietnam.
4. Demand for high-quality, affordable products
With inflationary pressures affecting spending habits, Japanese consumers are turning to quality yet affordable products rather than luxury items.
This provides Vietnamese goods with a great opportunity to capture market share. Moreover, success in Japan—one of the most demanding markets in the world—acts as a stamp of quality, paving the way for expansion into other international markets.
5. Growing Vietnamese and Asian communities in Japan
The expanding Vietnamese diaspora and Asian population in Japan are driving demand for Vietnamese-made products, creating new channels for exporters to increase sales and brand visibility in the market.
Challenges and Strategic Directions
Despite the many opportunities, Japan remains a highly demanding market. Japanese consumers pay close attention to design, functionality, and product quality, while import regulations are among the strictest worldwide.
To maintain a competitive edge, Vietnamese exporters should develop long-term business strategies for Japan, focusing on:
-
Enhancing human resource quality and digital transformation in operations
-
Improving production processes, management, and labor standards
-
Meeting technical, social, and environmental standards required in Japan
These efforts will not only help businesses increase export growth but also strengthen the reputation of Vietnamese goods in one of Asia’s most sophisticated markets.
