
In January 2023, Germany was Vietnam’s largest coffee export market, with a total export value of USD 42.3 million, followed by Italy with USD 35.7 million, the United States with USD 22.4 million, and Russia with USD 21.9 million.
According to data from the General Department of Customs, in the first half of February 2023, Vietnam exported 90,315 tons of coffee, worth USD 197 million, up 56% in volume and 50% in value compared to the same period.
Although coffee exports recorded strong growth in early February, the simultaneous occurrence of Lunar New Year (Tết Nguyên Đán) and Western New Year holidays in January 2023 affected export activities.
As of February 15, cumulative coffee exports reached 232,612 tons, equivalent to USD 507.2 million. Compared to the same period in 2022, Vietnam’s coffee exports decreased 19% in both volume and value.
According to the Agency of Foreign Trade (Ministry of Industry and Trade), the average export price of Vietnamese coffee in January 2023 was USD 2,178 per ton, up 1% from December 2022, but down 4% compared to January 2022.
Among the top 10 export markets, the highest average price was recorded for coffee exported to Indonesia at USD 3,391 per ton (down 36.4% year-on-year), making it the only market in the top 10 with a price above USD 3,000 per ton. Conversely, Germany had the lowest average price at USD 1,971 per ton, down 8.3% compared to the same period in 2022.
Notably, the average export price to Belgium rose sharply by 33.2% year-on-year, reaching USD 2,576 per ton.
In terms of markets, overall coffee exports in January 2023 showed a declining trend. Japan recorded the steepest decrease, down 49.1% compared to January 2022, followed by Belgium (-48.2%) and Italy (-34.3%). Meanwhile, Indonesia experienced the highest growth, up 190%, followed by the Netherlands with an increase of 76.5%.
During the month, Germany remained the largest export market for Vietnamese coffee with USD 42.3 million, followed by Italy (USD 35.7 million), the United States (USD 22.4 million), and Russia (USD 21.9 million).
In terms of export volume, Germany led with 21,487 tons, followed by Italy (17,274 tons), the United States (10,901 tons), and Russia (10,087 tons).
