
According to data from Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s pangasius (tra fish) exports regained growth momentum in February 2025, reaching USD 150 million, up 66% year-on-year.
Cumulatively, pangasius exports in the first two months of 2025 totaled USD 284 million, an 11% increase compared with the same period last year.
China & Hong Kong: Leading Importers

China and Hong Kong remained the largest importers of Vietnamese pangasius.
Exports to this market reached USD 36 million in February 2025 — up 56% compared to the same period in 2024.
However, total exports during the first two months were USD 67 million, 11% lower year-on-year, mainly due to the Lunar New Year holiday affecting trade flows in January.
CPTPP Bloc Surpasses the U.S. as the Second-Largest Market
The CPTPP bloc (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership) became Vietnam’s second-largest pangasius export destination, overtaking the United States.
In the first two months of 2025, exports to CPTPP members reached USD 53 million, up 42% year-on-year.
In February 2025 alone, pangasius exports to this bloc hit USD 29 million, a remarkable 128% increase compared to February 2024.
United States: Growth Amid Policy Uncertainty
Although it dropped to third place, exports to the U.S. in February 2025 reached USD 22 million, up 37% year-on-year.
Cumulative exports for the first two months totaled USD 39 million, an increase of 16% compared with 2024.
The U.S. remains one of Vietnam’s most important pangasius markets. However, following President Donald Trump’s return to the White House and his renewed “America First” policies, potential trade uncertainties have emerged.
While it is difficult to predict future tariff changes or market adjustments, the rapid rise of tilapia — particularly from China — is becoming an increasingly significant competitive factor in the U.S. market.
Brazil: Continuing Strong Growth
Vietnam’s pangasius exports to Brazil continued their strong upward trend.
In February 2025, export value reached USD 15 million, up 159% year-on-year.
Total exports to Brazil in the first two months of 2025 hit USD 28 million, up 42% compared to the same period in 2024.
European Union: Recovery Gains Traction
Exports to the EU also showed solid growth, with February 2025 exports reaching nearly USD 13 million, up 61%year-on-year.
Total exports in the first two months amounted to USD 26 million, representing a 24% increase from 2024.
Within the EU, the Netherlands remained the top importer, with 24% growth in the first two months of the year.
Outlook for 2025: Opportunities Amid Challenges
Vietnam’s pangasius industry is expected to remain a bright spot for export growth in 2025.
With farmers and fishers as the core driving force behind production, processing, and exports, the sector continues to strengthen its position globally.
Despite potential market volatility, geopolitical factors, and competitive pressures, Vietnamese pangasius — known for its delicate flavor, high nutritional value, and rich omega-3 content at an affordable price — is well-positioned to continue winning over consumers worldwide.
