Vietnam’s Pepper Export Value Up 46.2% in the First 11 Months of 2024

According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, by the end of November 2024, Vietnam’s pepper exportsreached 234.7 thousand tons, earning nearly USD 1.22 billiondown 4.4% in volume but up 46.2% in valuecompared to the same period in 2023.

Export Prices Surge by Over 50%

The average export price of Vietnamese pepper reached USD 5,187 per ton, a 53% increase compared to the first 11 months of 2023.

This strong price growth reflects global supply constraints, combined with rising demand in major consumer markets such as the United States and the European Union.

Export Performance by Market

Vietnam’s pepper exports to most major markets recorded growth in both volume and value, with the exception of India, where export volume decreased but export value still rose due to higher prices.

Export Performance by Product Type

  • Black pepper: 160.38 thousand tons, worth USD 834.47 million, down 6.1% in volume but up 40.6% in valueyear-on-year.

  • Processed pepper varieties — including ground black pepper, white pepper, ground white pepper, and green pepper — all saw increases in both volume and export value compared to the same period of 2023.

These trends demonstrate Vietnam’s continued success in moving up the value chain through product diversificationand value-added processing.

Outlook for 2025: Limited Supply, High Prices

Experts forecast that Vietnam’s 2025 pepper harvest will be delayed by 1–2 months due to prolonged drought conditions, leading to a decline in total supply.

This could support export prices, keeping them at high levels throughout the year. Meanwhile, demand in the U.S. and European markets is expected to remain stable.

However, these markets are also tightening quality, traceability, and food safety standards. To maintain and expand market share, Vietnamese exporters must:

  • Enhance product quality and consistency

  • Strengthen traceability systems

  • Comply with international food safety and sustainability regulations

Conclusion

Vietnam’s pepper industry achieved impressive export value growth in 2024 despite a slight drop in export volume.
With global demand stable and supply expected to tighten in 2025, Vietnam remains the world’s leading pepper exporter — but continued success will depend on quality improvement, sustainability, and meeting international market standards.
