Vietnam’s Pepper Exports Drop in Volume but Surge in Value

Hanoi, Vietnam – According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), during the first four months of 2024, Vietnam’s pepper exports decreased in volume but increased in total value, thanks to a significant rise in export prices. Notably, shipments to the U.S. grew by 45.2%, while exports to China plunged more than 95%.

April Export Highlights

In April 2024, Vietnam exported 26,245 tonnes of pepper, including 23,705 tonnes of black pepper and 2,540 tonnes of white pepper, earning USD 116.5 million.

  • Export volume rose 2.2% and value increased 5.2% compared with March.

  • The average export price of black pepper reached USD 4,292/tonne (up 4% from March), while white pepper averaged USD 6,034/tonne (up 6.5%).

Four-Month Cumulative Performance

From January to April 2024, Vietnam shipped 83,067 tonnes of pepper with a total export turnover of USD 352 million:

  • Volume decreased 19.4% year-on-year.

  • Export value rose 10.3%, driven by higher prices.

  • Average export prices: black pepper USD 4,065/tonne (+19.4% YoY), white pepper USD 5,678/tonne (+14.5% YoY).

Regional Export Trends

  • Asia accounted for 36.2% of total exports, but volume fell 52% year-on-year.

    • China’s imports collapsed 95.2%, dropping its market share to 5.2% from 33% a year earlier.

    • India became Asia’s top buyer with 5,552 tonnes (+23.9% YoY).

    • Exports surged to South Korea (+157.4%), Pakistan (+59.7%), and the Philippines (+18.5%).

  • The Americas saw export volumes rise 40.6%, making up 30.2% of total shipments.

    • The United States remained Vietnam’s largest single pepper market, importing 22,774 tonnes (+45.2% YoY), or 27.4% of total exports.

  • Europe represented 26.8% of exports, up 33.6% YoY, with strong growth in Germany (+104.7%), the Netherlands (+52.8%), and Russia (+68.7%).

  • Africa recorded a 4.7% decline, though Egypt’s imports grew 10.7% to 1,977 tonnes thanks to government foreign-currency support for imports.

Pepper Imports for Processing

Alongside exports, Vietnamese companies continue to import pepper for processing and re-export:

  • In April 2024, Vietnam imported 4,281 tonnes (4,085 tonnes black, 196 tonnes white) worth USD 15.6 million, up 14.9% month-on-month.

  • For the first four months of 2024, imports reached 12,269 tonnes (+20.5% YoY), with Brazil as the largest supplier, followed by Cambodia and Indonesia.

Price Update

  • Domestic prices (May 8) remained high at 102,000–104,000 VND/kg.

  • On the international market (May 7, IPC data), Vietnamese black pepper was stable at USD 4,400/tonne (500 g/l) and USD 4,500/tonne (550 g/l), while white pepper held at USD 6,500/tonne.
