Vietnam’s Rice Exports to Cambodia Doubled in January 2025

Vietnam’s rice exports to Cambodia surged by 100% in January 2025, reaching over USD 2 million, according to data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs.


1. Bilateral Trade Overview: Slight Decline in Total Turnover

In January 2025, the total trade value between Vietnam and Cambodia reached USD 838.8 million, a 1% decreasecompared to the same period in 2024.

  • Vietnam’s exports to Cambodia were valued at USD 420.8 million, down 6.3% year-on-year.

  • This figure represents 1.3% of Vietnam’s total exports to global markets.

  • Meanwhile, imports from Cambodia reached USD 418 million, up 5% year-on-year, accounting for 1.4% of Vietnam’s total imports.

  • Vietnam maintained a trade surplus of USD 2.8 million with Cambodia in the month.


2. Rice Leads Export Growth with a 100% Surge

Among key export items to Cambodia, rice recorded the strongest growth, soaring 100% compared to January 2024. Other commodities also posted significant increases:

3. Cambodia’s Rice Export Structure in January 2025

According to the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF), the country exported 59,086 tons of milled rice, earning USD 48.03 million in January 2025.

  • 39 rice exporters shipped to 45 markets, including 23 European countries, which imported a total of 36,714 tonsworth USD 29.79 million.

  • China, including Hong Kong and Macau, imported 3,772 tons valued at USD 2.56 million.

  • Four ASEAN countries purchased 9,413 tons worth USD 7.31 million, while 16 other destinations — across Africa, the Middle East, the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand — imported 9,187 tons valued at USD 8.37 million.

Export composition:

  • Fragrant rice: 93.01%

  • White rice: 2.93%

  • Parboiled rice: 2.31%

  • Organic rice: 1.42%

  • Other varieties: 0.33%

Additionally, wet rice exports totaled 619,489 tons, worth USD 139.39 million in January 2025.


4. Vietnam’s Overall Rice Export Performance (Jan–Feb 2025)

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD):

  • In February 2025, Vietnam exported 560,000 tons of rice, worth USD 288.2 million.

  • Cumulatively for the first two months of 2025, Vietnam shipped 1.1 million tons, valued at USD 613 million — up 5.9% in volume but down 13.6% in value compared to the same period of 2024.

  • The average export price for the first two months stood at USD 553.6/ton, a decline of 18.3% year-on-year.

Among the top 15 export markets, Turkey showed the strongest growth (up 600.7 times), while Cambodia recorded the sharpest decline (down 39.3%) compared to January–February 2024.
