Vietnam’s rice prices continue to top global markets, ranking first among the world’s four largest rice exporters. Premium and fragrant rice varieties have delivered clear economic benefits.
According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), Vietnam’s 5% broken rice is currently priced at USD 399 per ton. In comparison, the same grade of rice is priced at USD 354 per ton in Thailand, USD 376 per ton in India, and USD 355 per ton in Pakistan. This means Vietnam’s rice remains the most expensive among the top four exporting countries.
Preliminary data from the General Department of Customs shows that by August 15, Vietnam had exported nearly 5.88 million tons of rice, earning over USD 3 billion. The average export price over nearly eight months reached USD 512 per ton.
In addition to maintaining the world’s highest export prices, Vietnam has surpassed Thailand to become the second-largest rice exporter globally. Statistics from the Thai Rice Exporters Association show that in the first half of the year, India exported 11.68 million tons of rice, up 36.5% year-on-year, followed by Vietnam with 4.72 million tons (up 3.5%) and Thailand with 3.73 million tons, marking a 27.3% decline.
Recently, the Prime Minister directed relevant ministries and agencies to seize opportunities and accelerate rice exports, especially high-quality and organic rice, linked with traceability systems and the development of a national rice brand to increase value-added in exports. The government also urged faster implementation of the Project for Sustainable Development of One Million Hectares of High-Quality, Low-Emission Rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030.
Bùi Bá Bổng, Chairman of the Vietnam Rice Industry Association (VIETRISA), stated that Vietnam’s rice sector is progressing steadily toward green and prosperous development.
Specifically, the sector aims to become “green” for the health of people and the protection of the natural environment, adapting to and mitigating climate change. To achieve this, Vietnam’s rice industry has gradually enhanced the application of smart and precision agriculture solutions, aiming to reduce input waste, minimize negative environmental impacts, and cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Mr. Bùi Bá Bổng affirmed:
“The Project on Developing One Million Hectares of High-Quality, Low-Emission Rice in the Mekong Delta is a pioneering step — a roadmap to building a green and prosperous rice industry. In the near future, Vietnam is expected to become one of the world’s leading nations in large-scale green and low-emission rice production.”
