In 2024, Vietnam’s shrimp industry faced numerous difficulties and challenges. However, through resilience and determination, the sector reaffirmed its strong position in global exports, remaining one of the country’s key economic pillars and major contributors to national growth.
Impressive Growth Despite Global Challenges

During 2024, shrimp exports benefited from the recovery in demand and import prices in key markets such as the United States and China, which helped Vietnam’s exports to these countries surge sharply. Meanwhile, exporters maintained a solid presence in traditional markets such as Japan, South Korea, and the EU, thanks to strong product quality, reputation, and the competitive advantage of value-added processed shrimp.
Vietnam also leveraged multiple free trade agreements (FTAs), including the UKVFTA, CPTPP, and EVFTA, to expand exports to the UK, Canada, Australia, and Singapore, enhancing its competitive position in global trade.
Despite global inflation and strong competition from India, Ecuador, and Indonesia, Vietnamese shrimp maintained stable growth and accelerated toward the end of 2024. The U.S. market—Vietnam’s largest importer—continued to impose trade defense measures such as anti-dumping and countervailing duties, yet exporters navigated these barriers effectively.
A Record Year for Shrimp Exports
In 2024, Vietnam’s shrimp exports reached nearly USD 4 billion, up 15% year-on-year, a remarkable achievement given the difficult global context.
This success was driven by continued investment in efficient, low-cost, high-yield farming models, product diversification (fresh, live, frozen, processed shrimp), and a focus on both Vannamei (whiteleg shrimp) and Black Tiger shrimp.
The industry’s resilience also stemmed from strong government support and close coordination between central and local authorities in addressing barriers, facilitating trade, and boosting production capacity. This achievement reflects the united effort of the entire seafood community to recover and grow sustainably after natural disasters and economic turbulence.
Regional Leaders Drive Export Success
Provinces such as Soc Trang, Ca Mau, and Bac Lieu remained Vietnam’s leading shrimp exporters in 2024, each contributing USD 800–900 million to the nation’s total shrimp export turnover.
The shrimp industry’s achievements contributed significantly to Vietnam’s USD 10 billion seafood export milestone in 2024 — marking a new chapter of sustainable growth and transformation toward a green, value-added, and environmentally responsible economy.
Toward a Sustainable and Technological Future
Looking ahead to 2025, Vietnam’s shrimp industry expects easing challenges and stronger policy support from the government and relevant ministries. Farmers and exporters are more confident in overcoming barriers and expanding production to achieve higher revenues.
Vietnam’s shrimp sector stands ready to embrace a new era of innovation, transparency, and sustainability, advancing toward global leadership in high-quality, eco-friendly seafood production.
